"Inflation targeting has served India well, but it was never designed for supply-side shocks." Examine.
In your answer, consider the following:
I. The Monetary Policy Framework Agreement of 2015 and the statutory basis given to it by the amended RBI Act, 1934, including the 4% CPI target with a tolerance band of 2–6%.
II. The composition and working of the Monetary Policy Committee, and how its decisions are communicated and reviewed.
III. The distinction between demand-pull and cost-push inflation, with reference to food and fuel price shocks, monsoon failures and global commodity cycles.
IV. The experience of 2019–20 onion prices, the 2022 edible oil and energy shock following the conflict in Europe, and the RBI's response in each case.
V. Whether headline or core inflation is the better target for an economy where food carries nearly half the weight of the consumption basket.
VI. The role of fiscal and supply-side measures — buffer stocks, export curbs, import duty cuts and open market sales — alongside monetary policy.
VII. The costs to growth, employment and credit of tightening into a supply shock, and the risk of de-anchoring inflation expectations if the RBI does not act.
Conclude with a view on whether the framework needs to change at its next review, and if so, how. (250 words, 15 marks)

The part nobody teaches
Building the right mindset
Almost nobody fails this exam on syllabus. They fail on approach — what to read, what to skip, how to revise, how to attempt. That is taught here alongside every subject, not left for you to work out in year two.

Getting my own paper back with the marks broken down was worth the fee on its own. I could see exactly where I was losing two marks an answer, which no book was ever going to tell me.
NNandiniWrite Precise for RANKI started with the free daily question and stayed for a year before I bought anything. That says more about the teaching than any advertisement could.
AArun P.Free DailyHighly interactive and engaging classes. Everything an aspirant needs is here — content building, PYQ analysis, and mentorship that is not just a form you fill in. The teaching is the best part.
VVaibhav JukantwarPrelims Complete 2026I am not only part of the mentorship programme but also a student of the Economy batch. The way the Budget is taught alongside the theory is what made it stick for me.
BBittuEconomy, from zeroThe only platform where the mentorship is the person who teaches you. He knew which chapter I was avoiding before I admitted it, which is not something a mentor reading a dashboard can do.
MMegha SoniMentorshipI had written off CSAT as the paper I would somehow scrape through. Six weeks in it became the paper I was most confident about, and that changed how I planned the whole of Prelims.

HOPE Tushant
One teacher, one exam, and a way of reading it that took a decade to work out. You will not find padding here — no chapter included because a syllabus lists it, and nothing taught because it is interesting rather than because it is asked.
Integration. Subjects taught together, not stacked. Economy beside the Budget it explains.
Interconnection. Every fact hooked to the three others it belongs with, so recall has something to pull on.
Correlation. Read like an investigator: what does this change, and what does it contradict.
Learn the approach and you carry it on without me. That is the point, and the only version of this that counts as having worked.
